Can you please help? I am very clearly confused. Everywhere I look, everything I hear is about growth. We must grow. I am only 36 years old and have not travelled the world but I don't know anything that grows forever. It seems to me that everything is born, has a growth spurt, is stable for several years and then dies off. This seems to be true of all animals, plants, products and societies.
Here is where you can help me? I really don't understand who makes money in this world? I hear it's the Government or the Federal Reserve. Who decides how much to make?
Can we make more money every year? Can we have continuous growth without negative results? It seems that in order for the current financial system to operate an unlimited monetary supply would be a primary ingredient. I mean if every business and person's goal is to increase the amount of money they have in savings it seems we need to continuously create more money to fill the void in the economy when this money is stored away somewhere.
According to Federal Law the Federal Government can borrow as much money as it wants without limits. If I were a banker and I knew my customers where in debt more than they could ever pay, national debt $52 Trillion, total amount of currency $12 Trillion, then I would be a little hesitant to give out a loan too.
My main purpose for asking these questions is to figure out what is the root cause of all of this?
I know 200 years ago there was an abundance of resources and no organization or method strong enough to access them. In 2010 we have all of the organization and methods, we do not need to keep growing at a rate of a child in order to survive as a mature adult society. We certainly don't need to keep destroying our habitat and living in our own waste the way that children do. In fact the behavior of that rate of change is surely killing us.
When do we as business minded working adults consider the values we learned in grade school; be friendly, nice to each other, sharing? These are social values. It's time to get make business social and stop stealing and hitting each other. We live in a time of mature abundance not of scarcity, it's time we start acting like it.
Sharing and cooperation are the only way humans are going to survive on earth beyond the next hundred years. It's time to revamp capitalism to reflect these realities.
Luckly there are many organizations working on this.
