I learned something new and useful today about Facebook, and thought I would share it with everyone. David decided that it would be a good idea to get a more simple URL for the Word of Mobile page, so instead of having a bunch of numbers on the end (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Word-of-Mobile/199422686757) it would be simply www.facebook.com/WordofMobile or www.facebook.com/WOM.
The Benefits to Creating a Shorter URL Address for Your Facebook Business Page
Having a shorter URL makes it simpler to fit your page on business cards, and easier for people to remember how to get to your page.
How to Do It
I did a Google search and found the Facebook help page on usernames. Setting a new username for your Facebook pages is fairly simple. You can do it for both your profile page and any business pages that you have created. Just go to facebook.com/username. You need to have 25 fans to set a new username. You can set the name to basically anything you want so long as it hasn't been taken yet.
The Risks (What to Avoid Doing)
Once you choose a name, you are stuck with it. Seriously stuck. So if you make a typo, you just have to live with it. And once you choose a name for your page, you can't transfer that name to another page. So, for example, David already set his profile page to www.facebook.com/WordofMobile, so now he can't use that address for the Word of Mobile business page. Just thought I would pass that insight along to everyone. I know that I often take a "just try it" and if it doesn't work "try something else" approach to doing things on the web, so it comes as a surprise when you can't just take something back.
